Proper Punter introduces Barney’s Bets -Week 4

Posted by Barney's Bets in The Proper Punter | Jul 2015

Review of last week’s action

There was some improvement for the Proper Punter last weekend. We came out more than two points up, and came within a score of being 14 points up, only for Kerry to beat Cork by a margin 5, and not 3 or 4.

Despite a shaky first half, Tyrone rallied to make light work of Tipperary in the football qualifiers, and Monaghan shocked everybody bar themselves with the minimum margin of victory over Donegal.

Our current balance is –14 points, and the Proper Punter is feeling very positive coming into this weekend’s fixtures. Value is the name of the game.

GAA All Ireland Senior Football Championship

There are just 12 teams left in the battle for Sam – Provincial champions Mayo, Dublin, Kerry and Monaghan all go through to the quarter finals.

GAA All Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers

Fermanagh v Westmeath – Saturday 5pm

These teams met in the 2013 Championship, and Fermanagh won by a single point. I believe Westmeath have made greater progress since, so let’s not complicate matters. Westmeath can take a lot of positives from their Leinster Final appearance against Dublin. You can currently back them at 6/4 to win with Ladbrokes, which in my opinion is a bargain.

5 points Westmeath to win @6/4

GAA All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Quarter Finals

On Sunday, Tom Semple’s field hosts Dublin v Waterford at 2pm and Cork v Galway at 4pm.

Dublin v Waterford

Waterford are favourites for this fixture. I don’t disagree with that. They were physically impressive in their defeat to Tipp. However, Dublin can be backed at 12/5 in Boyles.

Dublin can win and have a reasonable chance of doing so. Taking out Killkenny and Tipperary, there are a lot of teams at a similar level. Cork, Limerick, Clare, Dublin, Limerick, Galway, are all capable of beating each other on their day. So my recommendation is to go where the value is, and that’s Dublin.

2 points: Dublin to win @ 12/5 Boyle Sports
1 points: Dublin HT/FT @ 5/1 Various

Cork v Galway

Cork are on a roll with impressive wins over Wexford and Clare. Galway disposed of Dublin on their second attempt but came up 7 points short of Kilkenny in the Leinster Final.

It’s hard to pick a winner in this fixture, maybe the best place to start is to look at recent Championship fixtures between the two. The teams met in 2009, 2011 and 2012 and Galway have come out on top each fixture. I also feel Galway have more firepower and they are priced as underdogs.

3 points Galway to win @ 11/8.
