In this weeks LiveGaelic Legends interview I spoke with former Cork hurler Sean Og O hAilpin who captained his county to an All Ireland title. As a result he was named RTE Irish sports person of the year in 2005. A former hurler of the year and three time all star winner has ensured that he will be fondly remembered on Leeside.

He won three All Ireland titles and five Munster titles with the Rebels and also added to this he has won two county titles with his club Na Piarsaigh. All these accolades have ensured that he will go down in history as one of the greatest players to have played the game.

As a man who wasn’t born in Ireland and only moved here when he was 11 years of age, what got you interested in Gaelic Games?

The truth is I didn’t even know what the Gaa was before I attended school at North Monastery in Cork. It was what you call a Gaelic Games school and I was very open minded at that age as to what sports I wanted to play so I just decided that I would give both Football and Hurling a go. Little did I know that I would love these games so much. What also helped me immensely was that I was enrolled in the Gaelcholaiste section of the school where all my classes were taught in Irish and this showed me what Irish culture was all about.

When did it hit you that you may have been very talented at these games?

I never thought like that. For me it was just about being a pastime for me and making new friends and that’s the truth, I never thought I was going to succeed on a higher level. If I’m being honest though when I got the shocking call at the age of 16 to be part of the Cork minor hurling team then I realized maybe I’m alright at this game but I initially thought to himself Jesus what is the manager thinking.

Making that team was great as it showed people had belief in me but for me winning an All Ireland title with my school that year was the pushing point as this showed what I could achieve . I cant tell you how much delight you get from winning an All Ireland title with all your friends.
