Ireland Win 2013 AFL Europe Championship

Posted by David Keane in The Irish Experiment | Aug 2013

Ireland are the 2013 AFL Europe Champions after just about getting the better of Great Britain in the final, played in DCU on Saturday.

Ireland Get The Better of Great Britain by a Single Point

Having topped their group after wins over Sweden, Denmark and Croatia, the Irish lads set up a clash with old rivals Great Britain who had in turn topped their group. In what was a tight affair throughout, Ireland captain John O’Regan had was putting in a dominating performance until a heavy collision in the second quarter curtailed his influence somewhat.

After that it was his GB counterpart, Ian Mitchell, who took the game by the scruff of the neck, sweeping up possession after possession around the half-back line on his way to a Man of the Match performance.

The final quarter was as topsy-turvy as the entire game had been to that point, with the lead swinging back and forth between the two times repeatedly until finally it appeared Great Britain had sealed victory when a Luke Booth goal put them five points clear with time all but expired. The Irish dug deep though, and moving the ball quickly from back to front, caused a scramble in the British back line. In the ensuing ruck for possession, the ball eventually popped into the grasp of defender Mark Leavy, who swung his boot at it and watched in elation as it sailed between the posts just before the sounding of the klaxon to give Ireland the victory.
