Build Up: MAYO vs SLIGO (The Six To Watch!)

Connacht Senior Football Championship – Sunday, 21st May – 2pm MacHale Park

It still beggars belief that Clarke was dropped for the All-Ireland Final Replay in 2016. There’s no guarantee it cost Mayo Sam Maguire but it certainly didn’t help. Has proven himself again and again in the 2017 National League with outstanding saves keeping Mayo in Division One.

Always good for a score, but the Sligo defender showed his true talent in their trip Stateside. Capable of playing in both full and half back lines, his burst up the field resulted in Kyle Cawley’s goal and avoiding any shock defeat to New York.

The veteran forward has been in the Mayo colours since 2004 and remains as important as ever to their Sam Maguire plans. The full forward scored 0-3 against both Kerry and Cavan and will be key to a county needing to find attackers during the summer.

The midfielder’s ability to win ball in the middle third and cut out the supply for Mayo will be key for the Yeats men to produce a shock. Delivered consistent peformances during the league campaign with standout displays against Armagh, Longford and Tipperary.

Only 24 years old but the Mayo captain is probably their most important outfield player. Has had the unenviable task of trying to rescue three All-Ireland deciders in the dying moments but with 17 goals in 34 games (plus 184 points), he’ll be key for Mayo reaching the final stages.

The hamstring injury that saw him miss the New York game keeps him a doubt for the Mayo clash. Sligo can’t afford to be without the attacker who has been their main tallisman during the league helping them to wins over Laois and Louth.
