Tommy Rooney

Tommy Rooney is a second year journalism student in DCU.

A man of many passions and a lover of all sports, the GAA takes precedence over everything else. New York by birth, and a Meath man by heart, he has the honour of playing for Meath Hill GFC week in week out. He also plays a bit of college football and has represented his beloved royals at underage level in the past. In recent years however, the pen has done more talking than the boots.

His family moved home to Ireland in 1999. Six years old and fresh out of kindergarten he soon learned that to survive a few things would have to change. The basketball was ditched for an O’Neills, ‘candy’ was no longer an acceptable phrase and ‘Lion bars’ became the greatest invention ever. One of his first memories of Ireland, and indeed the GAA was getting a picture beside the Sam Maguire outside his local primary school that autumn. It’s safe to say the moment passed him by. He attended an Irish primary school in nearby Carrickmacross, before moving on to do the leaving cert through Irish in Colaiste Oiriall, of faraway Monaghan town.

Some of his short-term aspirations include; the winning of a junior championship, getting his degree, writing plenty of interesting and insightful pieces of journalism, and to someday kick a 45.

For, he hopes to provide the readers with interesting articles on the GAA 2013 season, as well as covering a range of topics within the sport. Feel free to follow him on twitter – @TomasORuanaidh – or add him on Google+.
